Phelps v Spitz

Congratulations, to our new Olympic winner, who beat out the record that has been held by our Mark Spitz all these years.
Phelps’ history-making eighth gold medal of these games, won some races by ridiculously large margins, others with the closest of finishes. In his second Olympics in Beijing, he won eight golds and set seven world records.
Spitz’s performance was surpassed by a swimmer fitting of this generation. He was not pushed so hard. His closest test in Munich came from fellow countryman Jerry Heidenreich who trailed him by 0.43 seconds in the 100m freestyle. In his second Olympics, the 1972 Games in Munich, he won seven gold medals, breaking the world record in each event.
Both swimmers are American, and we can be very proud looking to even more from our new winner in the next Olympics.
